- What’s the source of the fish oil?
mumomega uses only high grade quality omega-3 and omega-6 oils. DHA is provided by pharmaceutical-grade omega-3 fish oil, sourced from tuna, which is harvested at specific times of the year to provide a particularly high level of DHA.
Once the oil is extracted, it is then concentrated using a sophisticated technique called molecular distillation. This leaves the oil in a free fatty acid form, enabling the removal of any pollutants and impurities. The oil is then chilled and filtered, allowing removal of any excess saturated fats. The free fatty acids are then recombined into triglycerides, the most easily-absorbed form, allowing optimum efficacy.
- What’s the source of the evening primrose oil (EPO)?
Equazen sources seed certified free of chemicals, pesticides or any other harmful residues. The EPO is then extracted using a special mechanical press that ensures the oil is protected from heat, light or oxygen. Importantly, no solvents are used during this process. The resulting oil is then filtered once to take out seed debris, but is otherwise left in a pure natural form, ensuring that various positive components such as anti-oxidants are retained. The oil gives a pure source of GLA, which is known to play a role in helping to maintain hormonal balance. It can also metabolise into the structural fatty acid, AA.
The omega-3 and omega-6 oils are then encapsulated at a pharmaceutical-grade facility.
- Are there any other additives?
We add natural Vitamin E in a form that is easy for both the mother and infant to absorb. Vitamin E is useful for its role as a powerful anti-oxidant, helping to 'mop up' free radicals and facilitating the role of the long-chain fatty acids.
Both sources of fatty acids are natural triglycerides: no synthetic forms of fatty acids are present. Natural triglycerides are in the form most suited for the body to absorb, and thus ensure optimum efficacy. The mumomega formulation contains only fatty acids and natural-source antioxidants, but is otherwise free of any additives, flavourings or synthetic compounds.
- When should I take mumomega?
Given the growing body of research evidence that DHA and AA consumption is essential for normal development of a baby's brain and eyes, and the potential linked to the increased likelihood of a full-term pregnancy, it is suggested that women should consume a sufficient intake of these nutrients to ensure an adequate supply for their growing babies. Ideally, this should begin before conception and continue right through pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Furthermore expectant mothers need to be careful about their fatty acid intake, not only for their babies, but also for themselves. During pregnancy, Mother Nature ensures the baby's nutrition takes priority. This leads to structural fatty acids from the mother's brain being depleted, carried across the placenta and utilised for foetal brain development. This entirely natural process can result in the maternal brain shrinking by 3% during pregnancy. If a woman then breastfeeds, it has been estimated that she will continue to lose 50 - 80 mg of fatty acids each day. Significantly, fatty acid depletion in women has been linked to post-natal depression.
Finally, on average it takes a woman around 26 weeks to replenish the fatty acids lost during pregnancy. Consequently, any subsequent babies may be at greater risk of not having sufficient DHA and AA for optimal brain and eye development. It is therefore important for women to increase their fatty acid intake to also ensure an adequate supply.
- Are there any side effects, or contraindications?
The incidence of side effects associated with the use of mumomega is extremely rare. However, we would recommend that if a person intending to supplement has any medical condition, known allergy, or is on any medication, or if there are any other concerns, that your GP is consulted before taking the product.
